Andrew Forge was born in Hastingleigh, Kent. Studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1947-49 under William Coldstream and Victor Pasmore. Was senior lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1950-64, head of the department of fine art at Goldsmith's College in 1964-70, lecturer in the department of art at Reading University in 1971-2, visiting professor at Cooper Union, New York in 1973-74 and professor of painting at Yale University in 1975-91. Held a number of official appointments including trustee of the Tate Gallery in 1964-71 and 1972-4 and of the National Gallery in 1966-72. Was president of the London Group in 1964-71. Forge was dean at Yale until 1983 and continued to teach until his retirement in 1994. Retrospective exhibition was held at Yale Center for British Art in 1996. His work is represented in a number of public collections (see BBC Your Paintings).
