Biography

Marjorie Sherlock was born in Wanstead, Essex. Studied art under Walter Sickert and Harold Gilman shortly before the World War I. Also studied with Malcolm Osborne at Royal College of Art in late 1920s and with Andre Lhote in the late 1930s. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917 and continued to show at the Academy for over 50 years. Also worked widely in America. For final 30 years of her life lived in obscurity at Oxenways, rambling house near Axminster, Devon. Retrospective exhibition of her work was at Maltzahn Gallery in 1973. Bristol City Art Gallery, museums in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam hold her work. (see Art UK).
