Biography

Phyllis Bray was born in London. Phyllis' father William de Bray had been attache to Maria Fyodorovna, mother of the murdered Tsar Nicholas II. Married to the painter John Cooper. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1927-1931 under Henry Tonks. In the mid-1920s Cooper headed formation of the East London Group of painters with which Phyllis Bray was closely involved. Her connection with the East End was strengthened when she completed three large murals for the People's Palace in the Mile End Road. For over 40 years helped the mural painter Hans Feibusch working in many churches around Britain.Joined London Group in 1934, showing regularly there. Exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, Wildenstein, Drian Gallery and Mignon Gallery in Bath. Memorial show was held at Collyer-Bristow in 1998 and a studio sale at Duncan Campbell Fine Art in 2005.
