Biography
William Telfer was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Began painting in 1925. In 1927 studied at the Falkirk Art School under James Davie, the father of the artist Alan Davie. Moved to Edinburgh in the early thirties and met with Harold Morton and Willie Wilson. Exhibitions of the Society of Eight whose members included at various times, F.C.B. Cadell, Sir William Gillies, John Duncan and Samuel Peploe, were the source of his inspiration to his work. Held many one man shows in Edinburgh and elsewhere. Exhibited RSA, RSW, SSA, Glasgow Institute and with the Montreal Art Association in Canada. Was a Trustee of the Smith Art Gallery and Museum in Stirling from 1958-1876.
