Biography

Born Louis Freeman in Glasgow. Self taught artist. Left school at the age of nine to help his family survive by selling patent medicines in the street. Ran away at 16 and joined the Army, serving in India and South Africa. After a period in Scotland again, went to Canada from about 1930 and stayed there for 14 years. His first drawings sold well at the Picture Loan Society, Toronto in 1943 at a one man show, returned to England in 1945 and had a one man exhibition at the Arcade Gallery that year. In 1947 his work was represented in a Surrealist show at the Galerie Maeght, Paris, was also shown in Basle, Switzerland and in New York. Showed with Brook Street Gallery and Ben Uri Gallery, London. The Tate Gallery, London, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris and Museum of Modern Art, New York hold his work.
