Biography
Malcolm Arbuthnot was born in Suffolk. Was a keen photograph and worked freelance for papers such as Illustrated London News and Sketch and became a noted portrait photographer. Commissioned by the Goupil Gallery to photograph artist such as William Nicholson, Sir Edward Poynter and James Pryde. Artbuthnot came into contact with Wyndham Lewis and the Vorticists, who influenced his painting style. In 1926 closed his London studio to concentrate on painting. Was taught by C A Brindley, attended a life class in Liverpool and later was instructed by J. D. Fergusson and W. P. Robins. Showed at Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries and elsewhere. One man shows in London included Fine Art Society and exhibitions after his death held by Grabowski Gallery and David Cross, Bristol. His work is held by Victoria & Albert Museum and Salford Art Gallery. Lived at La Houle, Jersey.
