Lawrence Gowing was born in London. Studied under William Coldstream at the Euston Road School. Held his first one man show at Leicester Galleries in 1948. Was professor of Fine Art at Durham University and principal at King Edward VII School of Art in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1948-1958; principal of Chelsea School of Art in 1958-1965; keeper of the British collection and depute director of the Tate Gallery in 1965-67; professor of fine art at Leeds University in 1967-1975 and Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College London in 1975-1985. Knighted in 1982 and elected RA in 1989. Arts Council held a retrospective exhibition in 1983. Tate Gallery and a number of public collections hold examples of his work (see Art UK).
