Landscape painter and glider enthusiast.
Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss was born in Paris in the year 1859, the son of John Frederick Francis Weiss and Sylvie Marie Josephine Talbot.
After residing in France during his childhood he became an artist and whilst on a painting holiday in West Sussex, England, he decided to stay and soon took up residence at Houghton House in the village of Houghton, Arundel, Sussex. This was in the early 1890's.
In August 1899 he became by Naturalization a British Subject and remained living and painting in Houghton for the rest of his life. He was a prolific and great painter of English landscapes in the style of the Barbizon School, mostly depicting scenes of the Sussex countryside. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and sold his paintings to a wide group of admirers, particularly in the United States. They are on view in galleries and museums in both countries. He was, however, perhaps better known as a great pioneer of aviation, an interest that he was as passionate about as his painting.
His work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, in Winnipeg, Chicago, St Louis, Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Dublin. Falmouth Art Gallery, Southampton Art Gallery, Kirklees Museum, Laing Art Gallery, City of London Corporation, Atkinson Art Collection, Museums Sheffield, Usher Gallery in Lincolnshire, Bradford and Worthing.
