Biography

John Armstrong was born in Hastings, Sussex. After Oxford University John studied at St.John's Wood School of Art in 1913-14. Held first one man show at the Leicester Galleries in 1928, became a member of Unit One in 1933. Exhibited in a group show at the Mayor Gallery in 1934. In the 1930s Armstrong works as a designer for the theatre and films. During the World War II Armstrong was an official war artist. After it he continued exhibiting widely, including Festival of Britain in 1951 and the Royal Academy extensively from this year. Painted a ceiling at the Council Chamber in Bristol in 1955 and a mural for the Royal Marsden Hospital at Sutton six years later. Memorial exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1975.
