Biography
One of the Glasgow Boys born in Hillhead, Glasgow. Attended Glasgow Academy, then local art school at with landscape lessons from A.D.Robertson. In 1874 exhibited two works at the RSA and a year later at Glasgow Institute. In 1877 Paterson went to Paris to continue art studies under Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and then the atelier of Jean Paul Laurens. In 1882 returned to Glasgow and in 1884 married Eliza Ferguson, they settled in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire. Founder member, Edinburgh Society of Eight in 1912. Exhibted at the RA, RSA, GI and others. His work is represented in National Gallery of Scotland, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Glasgow Art Gallery, Lillie Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh collection and National Gallery of New Zealand.
