Biography

H Clarence Whaite was born in Manchester. Studied art from the age 14 at the Manchester Evening Schools, in 1911 gained the Herbert Birley Gold Medal for Art and a scholarship of £ 60 a year. Using these funds went onto to study under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Arts. Showed his work at the New English Arts Club, London Group and the SEA Pictures for Schools exhibitions. Taught in several London schools, attending the University of London Institute of Education where from 1936-62 he oversaw art teacher training. Continued to painting and draw. Settled in Chichester. Pallant House Gallery holds one painting by Whaite.
