Hans Tisdall (nee Hans John Knox Aufseeser) was born in Munich, Germany as Hans John Knox Aufseeser. In 1928 entered the Academy of Fine Art in Munich.He lived and studied in Paris and in the artists' colony at Ascona in Switzerland before coming to London in 1930.
In 1935 was commissioned to produce big mural pictures for the University Settlement, Wapping. In 1936 awarded Medal of Honour at the International exhibition in Paris for work on the British Pavilion. During the Second World joined the Civil Defence Corps in 1940 and worked for the Ministry of Information. In 1945 held his first solo show at Leger Galleries, others followed in England, France and Germany, including Albermarle Gallery in 1990. In 1947 taught at the Central School of Art. In 1950 won competition to design entrance to funfair at Festival of Britain South Bank site. In 1964 produced large outdoor mural for the Manchester University and in 1966 mosaic murals for Manchester College of Science and Technology. His work is represented in a number of public collections (see Art UK).
