Biography
Frederick James Porter was born Auckland, New Zealand: studied painting with C. F. Goldie and then c.1907 went to Melbourne to study art and thence to Paris to the Julian Academy for three years. Worked in England as a professional artist; was draughtsman and designer for the British Government during 1914–18 war. Exhibited at the London Group from 1916, elected LG in 1920, Vice-president 1925–35; painted in France and England. In 1925 was a founding member of the London Artists' Association. Between 1924 and 1944 was a teacher at Central School of Arts and Crafts. He painted landscapes and still lifes. 1927 shared a show at Lefevre Gallery, London with Roger Fry. Porter was closely associated with The Bloomsbury Group during the 1920's and 30's.
