Biography
Claude Rogers was born in London. Showed artistic talent from very early on, won a number of art prizes at his school at St. Paul's. Studied art in the Slade School of Art in 1925-28, where his contemporaries were Rodrigo Moynihan, William Coldstream, Geoffrey Tibble and others who were associated with the founding of the Euston Road School in the late 1930's. Awarded Slade Scholarship in 1926. Visited Paris in 1927, then in 1930 began exhibiting with the LG and London Artists Association. Held a solo show at London Artist's Association in 1933. In 1936 showed eight watercolours with Elsie (Claude's to be wife) and Victor Pasmore in Exhibition of Modern Paintings in Kingston, Jamaica. Taught at the Polytechnic Secondary School in Regent Street, Raynes Park School, from 1949 at the Slade School of Art and from 1963 Reading School of Art. In 1937 together with Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream established the Euston Road School of Art. Exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1954 and 1960, in 1955 there was a retrospective show at the Hatton Gallery of King's College in University of Durham. Lived in Somerton, East Anglia.
Major retrospective exhibition was at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1973 and Ben Uri Gallery in 1992-93. Tate Gallery holds example of his work.
