Christopher Pemberton 1923-2010

Christopher Pemberton (1923-2010) was a well-known painter of portraits, interiors and landscapes, and an art teacher. He was born in London and was educated at Eton College, and later at Christ Church, Oxford after war service in the RNVR. Pemberton studied art at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from 1948 and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1956-67, including views of Fermanville in Normandy where he acquired a holiday home in the 1960s. He taught art at Bryanston School, Dorset in the early 1950s, then at Shrewsbury School before returning to Camberwell to teach where he remained for 27 years. He lived near Greenwich when at Camberwell and in 1983 settled near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Pemberton had a number of solo shows over the years and exhibited in mixed shows at the John Moores in Liverpool and at the Hayward Annual. His work is in the tradition of the Euston Road School reflecting that his teachers included William Coldstream and Claude Rogers. @copyright Grant Waters
