Biography
Charles Ernest Butler was born in St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex and studied art at the St John’s Wood School of Art and then at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited regularly with the Royal Academy from 1889 and also with the London Salon, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and at other leading provincial galleries. His work is held in a number of public collections, including Government Art Collection, Imperial War Museum, National Library of Wales, National Army Museum, Harris Museum & Art Gallery Preston, and Reading Museum & Town Hall. He lived in Chelsea in the 1880s, then in Fulham, and later in West Kensington.
