Alvaro Guevara was born in Chile. Travelled to England in 1908 and studied at the Slade School of Art in 1912-16, winning scholarship in 1914. Became associated with Roger Fry and the Omega Workshops, began to show with NEAC. In the 1920s returned to Chile, in 1926 held a show of Chilean paintings at Leicester Galleries. Married the artist Meraud Guinness in 1929 and went to live in France. Showed in Paris at Galerie Mouradian in 1938. His portrait of Edith Sitwell is in the collection of the Tate Gallery. York Museums Trust, UCL Art Museum and Perth & Kinross Collection hold his work. (see Art UK)
