Biography

Algernon Newton was born in London into a family of several painters and the artist's materials firm Winsor & Newton. Studied in Cambridge, then attended the Frank Calderon's School of Animal Painting and the London School of Art in Kensington. Began exhibiting at Royal Academy from 1903, 40 years later elected RA. First solo show at Leicester Galleries in 1931. Also exhibited at NEAC, Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and the Cooling Galleries. Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield toured a major exhibition of his work in 1980. His work is represented in public and private galleries (see Art UK).
