Biography
One of the pioneers of Post-Impressionism in England. Born in Warsaw, Poland. Settled in England in 1883. His early work was of scenes of Jewish life in East London. Studied at Royal Academy Schools from 1895. Held first solo exhibition at Bruton Galleries in 1905. Showed in mixed shows too at RA in 1901-36, AAA in 1908-16, International Society 1911–25 and with 1910-11 Post Impressionist exhibition in London, organised by Roger Fry. Showed in Berlin, Paris and New York. Executed stage designs, of which an exhibition was held at the Incorporated Stage Society 1915. Retrospective exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries 1947, the Ben Uri Gallery 1948 and 1952, and the Woodstock Gallery 1959. Died 6 January 1961 in London. Memorial exhibition at the Ben Uri Gallery 1961. Tate Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and many others hold his work. (see
