Biography
Born in Penzance, daughter of the artist Norman Garstin, who was her principal art teacher. She accompanied him on many of his 'painting holidays' to France, lived with her parents until they died. Moved from Penzance to the Penwith coast in 1960. Travelled widely, often accomanied by her friend, the artist Dod Procter. Maintained close friendships with many of the St. Ives artists, especially the naive artist Alfed Wallis. Alethea first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1912. She was to go to exhibit 27 times at the academy. Joint exhibition of Norman and Alethea Garstin was held in 1978 starting in St. IVes, travelling to London, Bristol and Ireland. Bristol City Art Gallery, National Trust and others hold her work.
