Biography

Alan Stenhouse Gourley was born in Ayr, Scotland. Studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1928 and Edinburgh College of Art in 1929-1931, where his teachers included William Gillies. Moved to South Africa where from 1932-37 taught at Johannesburg Technical College. In 1938-40 studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During the World War II was an instructor in camouflage.In 1945 studied at the Slade School of Art, his teachers included Randolph Schwabe. Exhibited mainly at Mall Galleries and was for some time a president of ROI. His work is represented in the collection of HMQueen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
