Biography

Elspeth Buchanan was born in Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire. Studied at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1933-38 on an Andrew Grant Open Scholarship, her teachers including Herbert Wellington and Rober H. Weswater. Gained a Travelling Scholarship in 1938-39. During the World War II worked in Naval Intelligence in Oxford, where in 1943 she studied art with Bernard Meninsky. Buchanan was noted for her small watercolour landscapes of Edinburgh. Showed her work at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Academy, New English Arts Club and London Group. Had her first solo show at Great King Street Gallery in Edinburgh in 1972.
