Biography

Ethel Sands was born in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. As a baby travelled with her family to England and settled in London in 1879. Studied with Eugene Carriere in 1896-01 and with Henri Evenepoel in 1897. Exhibited in Paris and in England with Frank Rutter's Allied Artist Association, Fitzroy Street Group and New English Arts Club. In 1905 she met Sickert and like many in his circle became a founder member of the London Group in 1913. Had her first London show with Nan Hudson at Carfax Gallery in 1912.
