| William Ratcliffe was born at Churchwater, Norfolk. Studied at Manchester School of Art. In 1908 met the painter Harold Gilman, who encouraged Ratcliffe to paint. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1910. Exhibited at the AAA. was a member of the Camden Town Group and a founder member of London Group. From the early 1920s Ratcliffe concentrated on watercolours. Exhibited at the Carfax Gallery, NEAC, Goupil Gallery and in America. Held his first solo exhibition in 1946 at Roland, Browse and Delbanco. His work is represented in many public galleries, including Letchworth Museum, Southampton City Art Gallery and Tate Gallery.
