Biography

George Clausen was born in London. Left school in 1867 and spent his evenings working in the schools at South Kensington. In 1868 won a gold medal for design and again in 1870. Worked at the studio of Edwin Long and following his advice visited Belgium and Holland in 1875-76. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1876 and the same year set up a studio in London. In 1883 he studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Bouguereau. Elected RA in 1908.Was Professor of Painting at the RA Schools in 1904-1906, later became Director of the Schools.
