Biography
Raymond Coxon was born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Studied at Leeds College of Art in 1919-21 and Royal College of Art in 1925. At Leeds Raymond Coxon knew Henry Moore, of whom he painted a notable portrait. With Moore, Leon Underwood and others he formed the British Independent Society in 1927. Taught at Richmond School of Art. Showed with London Group. Exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, Leicester Galleries and Cooling Galleries. Had first solo exhibition with the London Artists' Association at Cooling in 1928. Official War Artist in the World Warr II. Married to the artist Edna Ginesi, with whom he had a joint exhibition at Parkin Gallery in 1985. Retrospective exhibition at Stoke-on-Trent City Museum and Art Gallery in 1987; a memorial show at the Walton Gallery in 2001. Tate Gallery and Manchester City Art Gallery hold examples of his work.
