Biography

David Gentleman was born and lives in London. His father, Tom Gentleman, also an artist. Attended St.Alban's School of Art in 1947-48 and in 1950; then Royal College of Art in 1950-53 where he studied Edward Bawden and John Nash. Gentleman became a junior tutor at RCA in 1953-55. Illustrated a number of books: 'Plats du Jour' in 1957, covers for 'New Penguin Shakespeare' in 1968-78 and many others. Wrote and illustrated 'David Gentleman's London' in 1985, 'David Gentleman's Italy' in 1997 and others. Illustrated and designed posters for London Transport and the National Trust, the Eleanor Cross mural for Charing Cross tube station in 1979. Retrospective exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 2004. Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Maritime Museum and many private collections hold examples of his work.
