Biography

Painter and printmaker. At school she gained a scholarship to the Female School of Art and because of her promise, she transfered to the Slade School of Art in 1910. Henry Tonks, a teacher at the Slade at that time, recognized her talent. Clare Winsten produced many portraits of famous people, whom she met, including the Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi, the writer George Bernard Shaw and composers Benjamin Britten and Dmitri Shostakovich. Her work was included in the Womens New Hall, Cambridge 1992.
