Biography

Richard Carline was born in Oxford. Attended Percyval Tudor-Hart's Academie de Peinture in Paris in 1913-1915. In 1915 started a long association with Stanley and Gilbert Spencer at Cookham (his sister Hilda married Stanley in 1925). Becomes an official war artist. Elected LG in 1920 and at this time the Carline's Downshire Hill house became a centre for artists such as Henry Lamb, John Nash and Mark Gertler. In 1921-24 studied part time at Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks. Held first solo show at Goupil Gallery in 1931. Exhibited at the ACA Gallery in New York in 1938. In 1941-42 elected to the committee of Artist International Association. In 1975 exhibition of early drawings and watercolours at Anthony d'Offay Gallery, London. Imperial War Museum holds examples of his work.
