Biography

William George Gillies was born in Haddington, East Lothian. After the World War I service, attended the Edinburgh College of Art in 1919-22 and was a founder member of 1922 Group. A travelling scholarship took him to the continent, where he studied with Andre Lhote in Paris. Exhibited frequently at RSA and Glasgow Institute. Elected RSA in 1947, RA in 1970 and knighted. His work is represented in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, City of Edinburgh Collection, Tate Gallery and others.
