| Born in Warnham, Sussex. In 1938 enrolled at Goldsmiths' College School of Art, then at Glasgow School of Art in 1940-43 under Hugh Adam Crawford, graduated with several prizes. In 1947 Eardley spent six months under James Cowie at the Patrick Allen-Fraser School of Art, Hospitalfield. In 1948 took up post diploma scholarship at the Glasgow School of Art. Travelling scholarship took her to France and Italy in 1948-49, the resulting work was shown at her first solo exhibition at Glasgow School of Art in 1949. Eardley now embarked on her two main themes as a painter of Glasgow tenement life with studies of children and from 1951 pictures of sea and coast at Catterline. Elected RSA in 1963. In 1988 a major retrospective exhibition was held at Talbot Rice Centre and RSA, Edinburgh. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has an extensive collection of her work. |
